Fumed Robinia with inlaid Paua Shell

Keepsake Urns

The term 'fuming' refers to the the chemical reaction with ammonia fumes and the natural tannic acids in certain woods. Robinia or to give it it's botanical name robinia pseudoacacia is one of those woods. The fuming cuases the surface to take on a green tinge where the natural colour of robinia is pale straw.

The Paua shell or Abalone came from a visit to Maori art centre in Kaikora, New Zealand where I bought a 500 gram pack of it. I selected pieces of shell that matched the curves of the urn and then inlaid each piece.

The lid is English Box and has a handcut 12tpi thread ensuring a secure closure.

It measures 215mm high x 150mm diameter and has a capacity of approximately 500mls.
