Companion Urns

Maples are often planted as ornamental trees due to their autumn colours, relatively fast growth, ease of transplanting and lack of hard seeds that would pose problems for mowing lawns.
It is a very pale or white wood which works well and accepts staining easily. This tree had out grown it’s position in a garden in Stratford upon Avon and was offered to me by the tree surgeon taking it down.

Due to the time of year (mid summer) it was taken down I had to process the the tree quickly to prevent splitting and discolouration, the butt is cut into appropriate sized blanks, then taken to the lathe the first time they are roughed out and left to dry for up to 6 months.
Once the piece is dry it’s are taken back to the lathe, the exterior shape is refined then multiple coats of stain are applied to enhance the hidden figure. Up to 6 coats of lacquer are applied to give a long lasting durable finish. The lids are individually made and have a hand cut 12tpi thread ensuring a secure closure.

It measures 240mm H x 245mm D and has a cubic capacity of 4.8 Ltrs (9 ½" H x 9 ¾" D and 293 cu in)
